Health officials in Haiti have reported 64 further deaths as a result of the cholera epidemic, which has already claimed more than 1200 lives.

The latest figures come a month after the outbreak was first detected north of the capital Port-au-Prince, AFP reports.

The epidemic quickly spread to Port-au-Prince where hundreds of thousands of earthquake survivors are living in squalid tent cities with poor sanitation.

Officials say the latest deaths are from the capital and include 20 children under the age of five, but the hardest-hit region remains Artibonite where the first cases were detected in October.
