Diplomatic cables to be published by website

The Obama administration is warning foreign governments that the WikiLeaks website is about to release sensitive US diplomatic cables in an attempt to destablise global security.

As well as notifying foreign governments, the Obama administration has sent emails to Congress warning that WikiLeaks intends to release hundreds of thousands of classified State Department cables.

The ABC reports the Pentagon says the cables touch on sensitive foreign policy issues.

The State Department is already calling the release damaging, saying it could create tensions with other governments and jeopardise lives.

A senior Pentagon official says the cables contain candid analysis and their publication by WikiLeaks is an attempt to destablise global security.

The administration says it expects the release in the next few days.
