The ACT Brumbies Super 14 rugby player Shawn Mackay has died in hospital in South Africa.

The 26-year-old lock suffered a badly broken leg and spinal and head injuries when he was hit by a vehicle in Durban on 26 March.

He had shown some positive signs after being brought out of a medically induced coma, and underwent spinal surgery. But he developed an infection in his bloodstream and his condition deteriorated rapidly.

Brumbies players were told of the death when they arrived back in Australia from their Super 14 games in South Africa.

Mackay was in his first season with the Brumbies after captaining the Australian Sevens team at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.
