Pitcairn mayor will defend porn charges - lawyer

5:06 pm on 4 December 2010

A lawyer representing the mayor of Pitcairn Island, who is facing charges of possessing child pornography, says his client will vigorously defend the charges.

Mike Warren faces 25 charges of possessing indecent images of children on his computer, which was seized by police several months ago.

Mr Warren is accused of having more than a thousand images and videos of child pornography on his computer.

A three way video conference was held last week between Mr Warren in Pitcairn, lawyer Tony Ellis in Wellington and the magistrate and prosecutors in Auckland.

Mr Ellis says his client sought name suppression for a week so he could tell the other islanders.

He says Mr Warren did that by posting the summary of facts on the town's noticeboard.

Mr Ellis says the proceedings are still at a very early stage and his client is yet to enter a plea.

Another hearing, which will also be a video conference, will be held next month.

Mr Warren is on bail.
