Lack of shelter in Pakistan as winter nears

8:31 am on 5 December 2010

Millions of people in Pakistan are facing winter without proper shelter after their homes were destroyed by the recent floods.

Officials are accused of mismanaging the crisis - a claim the government denies.

Floods from the monsoon rains that swept from north to south in July - August affected 21 million people in the country's worst natural disaster.

Huge parts of Sindh province in the south remain underwater. The ABC reports much farmland could remain flooded for another six months.

An estimated 6.8 million people still need emergency shelter.

However, a $US58 million fund administered by the prime minister's office remains entirely unspent.

A spokesman for prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, said plans for the money were still being finalised as part of a national recovery plan.

The World Bank has put the overall figure for flood recovery at $US9.7 billion.
