A movie version of a hit Disney TV show featuring teen actress Miley Cyrus has topped the North American box office this Easter.

Hannah Montana: The Movie has sold $US34 million worth of tickets - twice as much as Disney had forecast.

As in her TV show, Cyrus, 16, plays a regular schoolgirl by day and a pop star by night.

But her father (Billy Ray Cyrus) decides she needs to get back to her small-town roots, so takes her on a surprise trip to her old Tennessee home where love and other complications ensue.

Exit polling showed that women made up 80% of moviegoers. Disney said 60% of the audience was aged between two and 17.

Last weekend's champion Fast & Furious slipped to second place.

Monsters vs. Aliens was in third place in its third weekend; having taken $US141 million to date.

Mall-cop comedy Observe and Report, came in fourth place in its opening weekend.

Knowing, a time-travel drama starring Nicolas Cage, came in fifth.
