Israeli PM calls Palestinian leader

4:35 pm on 13 April 2009

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, he intends to resume talks and cooperation to promote peace.

It was their first contact since Mr Netanyahu took office for the second time on 31 March. He previously held the post from 1996 to 1999.

Mr Abbas initiated the telephone call on Sunday and Mr Netanyahu's office described it as friendly and warm.

The new Israeli leader has not publicly endorsed the creation of a fully independent Palestinian state, which is a fundamental demand of the Palestinians.
