Some ABC Learning centres may yet have to close

The Australian government has no plans to take over eight unviable ABC learning centres set to close within months.

The court-appointed receivers of the debt-stricken company, which went into receivership last November, have found new operators for 210 of the original 241 centres that were deemed unviable.

Alternative care has also been found for children at 19 centres that will close. But parents of children at a further eight centres with no potential buyers have not been given the same certainty.

Deputy prime minister Julia Gillard says it's welcome news that most of the centres will stay open, but the government won't take over the ones where alternative care has not yet been found.

"The government ... wanted to sort this mess out ... we did not want to be long-term owners of childcare centres," Ms Gillard says.

The federal government provided up to $58 million to keep all ABC Learning centres open after the company went into receivership with debts of more than $1.5 billion last November.

It is expected that about 80 of the ABC2 group employees will be offered jobs with the new operators.
