PNG PM referred to tribunal

6:05 am on 10 December 2010

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare is to face a leadership tribunal. He is accused of misconduct in office.

Public prosecutor Jim Wala Tamati says he will establish a leadership tribunal into the allegations in a few days.

The ABC reports the tribunal follows an inquiry by the Ombudsman into improprieties regarding Sir Michael's financial statements dating back 20 years.

Sir Michael says he will step aside if a leadership tribunal is formed and

he respects the prosecutor's decision.

But he is challenging his referral to the prosecutor, in the Supreme Court.

Sir Michael must step down once referred to the leadership tribunal.
