Gay ban repeal blocked

12:13 pm on 10 December 2010

Republicans in the United States Senate have blocked a repeal of a ban on gays serving openly in the US military.

On a 57-40 vote, Democrats fell short of the needed 60 votes to clear a Republican procedural hurdle and move to end the policy known as 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell', which has been in force for 17 years.

That means the repeal is unlikely to pass this year.
