Delhi move to protect late-night female workers

8:00 pm on 11 December 2010

Delhi police have announced new measures designed to protect women who travel home from work late at night.

Employers are now required to make sure that female workers are escorted to their doors and that every taxi has a guard as well as a driver.

The BBC reports the rules will affect the growing number of educated young women who work in call centres and large offices in the Indian capital.

More than 400 cases of rape have been recorded by police in the city so far this year.
