Islamic law introduced in Somalia

5:48 am on 19 April 2009

Parliament in Somalia has approved a government proposal to introduce Islamic law in the country.

The deputy speaker of parliament said the vote was unanimous and that Somalia now has an Islamic government.

Sheikh Sharif Ahmed promised to introduce sharia law when he was elected president in January.

The move is aimed at appeasing Islamist rebels who have been waging civil war in Somalia since 1991.
