French police have arrested the military chief of ETA, along with at least two other members of the Basque independence movement.

A Spanish government source said on Saturday ETA military leader Jurdan Martitegi was arrested in southeast France following a joint operation between Spanish and French police.

In a separate statement, French Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said France had arrested three suspected members of ETA in Montauriol, in the eastern Pyrenees region that borders Spain.

ETA has been fighting for independence for the Basque Country, in northern Spain and southwestern France, since the 1960s and has killed more than 800 people.
