Attacks by Taliban in two cities

6:08 am on 20 December 2010

Suicide attackers have targeted Afghan military bases in two cities, leaving 13 members of the security forces dead.

In the northern city of Kunduz, four suicide bombers stormed an army recruitment centre, sparking a long gunfight.

On the outskirts of the capital, Kabul, a bus was ambushed outside the army's main recruitment centre. One of the attackers was killed.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The recruitment centre in Kunduz is in the heart of the city, close to government buildings.

The BBC reports questions will be asked as to how the attackers managed to get past many police checkpoints on the outskirts of the city.
