Visit to India by Medvedev

4:45 pm on 21 December 2010

President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia is due in India on Tuesday for a two-day official visit.

He is the latest in a series of foreign leaders to travel to Delhi seeking business deals and closer ties.

Nuclear and defence contracts are expected to be signed between the two countries, which have been allies since the Cold War.

In the past six months, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has welcomed British Prime Minister David Cameron, US President Barack Obama, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to Delhi.

The BBC reports each was accompanied by a large business delegation.

Two areas in particular attract foreign interest: India's ambitions to greatly expand and modernise its air force and its plans to build a series of nuclear power generators. It needs foreign technology and knowhow for both.

A $US30 billion agreement to design and develop a stealth fighter jet for the Indian air force is reported to be high on the agenda for President Medvedev.
