Outlaws have killed at least 27 people in an overnight attack on a village in Kenya.
Police say the Mungiki gang is Kenya's version of the mafia and is involved in extortion and racketeering rings, protection fees, kidnapping and murder.
They say the attack came after people decided they did not want the gang in their village, in the Nyeri West district, about 100km from the capital Nairobi.
Internal Security Minister George Saitoti said communities were tired of extortion and were fighting back against the gang.
The Mungiki is drawn from the Kikuyu, Kenya's largest ethnic group and has links to politicians and powerful Kikuyu families.
