Quakes off southern Japan and in north-west England

2:46 pm on 22 December 2010

A 7.4 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off southern Japan on Wednesday morning, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake triggered local tsunami warnings, the BBC reports, but no tsunami came and the warnings were later lifted.

There have been no reports of casualties or damage from the quake, which was centred 155 kilometres off the Bonin Islands, about 1000 kilometres south-east of Tokyo.

Earthquakes often hit the seismically active area - something that can't be said of the county of Cumbria in north-western England, where a 3.6 tremor was felt late on Tuesday night local time.

People have described hearing and feeling the earth moving "for well over a minute" but police say there are no reports of injury or damage.

It was also felt in locations across Lancashire, south-western Scotland, Yorkshire, Northumberland and the Isle of Man.
