Airport investigation ordered

President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia has ordered prosecutors to investigate the management at Moscow's two main airports.

Frustrated passengers facing severe delays because of bad weather at Sheremetyevo, north of the capital, have attacked Aeroflot staff.

Earlier, freezing rain at the weekend led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports.

The rain resulted in a complete power shutdown at Domodedovo when tree branches touched power lines loaded with ice.

Reports said no food or basic facilities were offered to passengers, who had to wait for their flights in the dark.

The BBC reports police from the Omon special force were deployed at both airports following incidents on Monday.

On Tuesday, a passenger at Domodedovo told the Interfax news agency there were still problems with power, ventilation and water supplies in airport toilets.

A limited number of aircraft began leaving Domodedovo on Monday, but officials say it will take another two or three days for the situation to return to normal.
