A French model who fronted an anti-anorexia campaign while suffering from the illness has died.

The cause of the 28-year-old's death is not known, but colleagues say Isabelle Caro died after being treated for an acute respiratory illness.

The BBC reports that in 2007, posters and billboards in Europe carried a shocking image of a naked young woman whose shriveled body and thin haggard face gave her the look of a 70-year-old.

It was part of a campaign against anorexia and the model was Ms Caro, then aged 25.

She says she was exposing her intimate physical torment in order to show young girls the damage that could be caused by diets and the dictates of fashion.
