Fire in Australian coal mine halts production

An underground fire continued to burning at a coal mine in the Hunter Valley, in New South Wales on Friday.

The fire started at the Blakefield South mine near Broke at 7.30pm on Wednesday.

All employees working underground at the time were safely evacuated. Production at the site has been halted.

The mine's owner, Xstrata Coal, said in a statement that the fire was believed to be behind the operation's longwall but its cause had not yet been determined
