Heavy rain forces evacuations in Victoria

10:39 pm on 14 January 2011

Heavy rain has flooded homes in towns in the Australian state of Victoria, some of which were hit by catastrophic bushfires in 2009.

The State Emergency Service (SES) has issued several evacuation warnings for towns in the path of rising rivers and creeks in central and western Victoria on Friday.

Evacuation warnings were issued for the towns of Bridgewater, Carisbrook, Newbridge, Dadswell Bridge, Malmsbury and Durham Ox.

About 2000 people have been moved out of their homes, including all of the 800 people who live in Carisbrook near Maryborough, the ABC reports.

The SES says hundreds of homes have been flooded and flood waters are still rising in some areas.

Horsham in the west of the state is expected to flood on Saturday, while residents along the Maribyrnong River, in Melbourne's north-west, are being warned to prepare for rising flood waters also.

Deluge in Tasmania

In Tasmania, the State Emergency Service has dealt with more than 100 calls for help after a deluge across the north.

The SES says the worst appears to be over but people should remain vigilant.

The rain is easing but several dams are being monitored on Friday, the ABC reports.

A dam near Ulverstone has broke its banks and properties had to be sandbagged.

There has been flooding in the Meander Valley, Northern Midlands and north-west.

There has been concern a dam overflow may affect about 40 homes along the Penguin Creek. Residents of a nursing home were moved out as a precaution.
