US to ease Cuba travel rules

7:53 am on 16 January 2011

The United States government is easing travel restrictions for its citizens who want to visit Cuba.

President Barack Obama says religious organisations and some higher education institutions will now be able to sponsor visits.

He says the idea is to develop people-to-people contacts, the BBC reports.

In April 2009 there was a slight easing of the US trade embargo against Cuba.
