West Australian Premier Colin Barnett says the latest boat of asylum seekers highlights the need for tighter border protection.
A boat, carrying 50 passengers, was detected about 400km north-west of Broome on Tuesday. The ABC reports it was the 11th boat intercepted this year.
The passengers were being taken to Christmas Island, where 265 asylum seekers are being held.
Mr Barnett says there's a surge of boat people trying to enter Australia and the Government needs to increase its surveillance and deploy more patrol boats around the coast.
He says the whole immigration process will be discredited if it becomes easier to get to Australia "by jumping on a boat in Indonesia."
