Afghanistan bomb kills wedding guests

9:56 am on 17 January 2011

A roadside bomb has killed nine civilians in northern Afghanistan.

Police said all were wedding guests and their vehicle was destroyed in the blast, which occurred in the northern province of Baghlan.

Baghlan governor Abdul Majeed said the road the minibus was travelling on was frequently used by foreign forces.

The Taliban and other militants routinely use roadside bombings against NATO and Afghan forces, but civilians are often killed.

Civilian and military casualties in Afghanistan are at levels not seen for a decade, the BBC reports. Last year more than 2,400 civilians died, with roadside bombs the biggest source of casualties.
