Inauguration of new Afghan parliament postponed

1:04 pm on 20 January 2011

The inauguration of a new parliament in Afghanistan has been postponed by a month because of further claims of vote rigging.

A special tribunal, set up to deal with electoral complaints, has called for the inauguration to be postponed from this Sunday until 22 February, because of the scale and severity of the claims.

President Hamid Karzai has agreed to the tribunal's request.

The ABC reports the delay further overshadows the results of the election last September.

Almost a quarter of the 5.6 million ballots cast in the poll were declared invalid because of fraud, violence and intimidation.
