A Labour Party MP in Britain has been suspended from Parliamentary duties after claiming expenses for a mortgage that had already been repaid.

Former cabinet minister Elliot Morley says he claimed Stg 16,000 pounds by mistake and has now repaid the money.

He said the claim had been a "mistake" due to "sloppy accounting".

Disclosures in the Daily Telegraph newspaper about MPs' expenses have caused outrage.

Mr Morley, who is MP for Scunthorpe, has referred himself to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner in an effort to clear his name.

According to the Telegraph, he claimed Stg 800 pounds per month for a Scunthorpe property for 18 months after the mortgage ended.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was "very angry about what has happened" on MPs' expenses.

In a speech, he said disciplinary action would immediately be taken where necessary.
