Whistle-blower website WikiLeaks has been nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

A Norwegian member of parliament has submitted the nomination, citing WikiLeaks as one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency.

The website released hundreds of thousands of confidential United States documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in recent months has been slowly publishing more than 250,000 leaked US diplomatic cables.

Its founder, Julian Assange, is facing charges of sexual assault on two women in Sweden.
