Court considers Assange extradition

10:17 am on 8 February 2011

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has appeared in a British court in a hearing to determine whether he should be extradited to Sweden.

The 39-year-old Australian faces allegations of sexual assault against two women in Stockholm in August last year, which he denies.

Mr Assange's lawyer Geoffrey Robertson QC has told the court there is a risk of "flagrant denial of justice" if he is tried for rape in Sweden, the BBC reports.

The defence team says he will not get a fair trial, as all of Sweden's sex cases are held behind closed doors.

Mr Robertson also fears his client could face the death penalty if then extradited to the US on separate charges relating to Wikileaks.

At the extradition hearing, the prosecutor in Sweden attempting to extradite Mr Assange has been accused of having a biased view against men.

His lawyers earlier said he was willing and able to co-operate with Swedish authorities, so no arrest warrant was needed.

The whistle-blowing website has been used to publish leaked US diplomatic cables, as well as other sensitive material from governments and high-profile organisations.

The extradition hearing is expected to last two days.
