Australia's jobless rate remains low

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the number of people employed rose by 24,000 in January, but fulltime employment fell by 8000.

Treasurer Wayne Swan says the jobs data shows that whatever nature throws at the nation, the fundamentals of the economy remain sound, AAP reports.

Australian states have been battered by flooding, a severe cyclone and bushfires in recent months.

"The result should provide confidence about our nation's outlook as our battered communities and businesses begin the long task of rebuilding, Mr Swan said.
