9:22 pm on 10 February 2011

US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has spoken her first words since suffering a gunshot wound to the head in January.

The 40-year-old was shot while holding a constituent meeting in Tucson, Arizona, on 8 January. Six people were killed and 13 others wounded.

Ms Giffords is undergoing intensive rehabilitation in Houston, Texas, and is said to be making good progress.

She has reportedly asked for toast for breakfast - her first words since the shooting.

Ms Giffords hopes to be well enough to travel to Florida see her astronaut husband Commander Mark Kelly take off in the space shuttle Endeavour's final mission in April.

Jared Loughner, 22, is currently jailed pending trial for the shootings.
