Hundreds of people displaced by volcanic activity in Vanuatu in 2009 are being allowed to return home.

A national disaster committee spokesperson says emissions of toxic gas and ashes on the western side of Gaua Island have decreased over the past five months.

Some 400 residents can now return to their villages from temporary settlements on the eastern side of the island.
