Egyptian treaty announcement welcomed

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed the Egyptian military's declaration that it will honour all treaties.

Mr Netanyahu says the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt has greatly contributed to both countries and is the cornerstone for peace and stability in the entire Middle East.

The treaty was signed by President Anwar Sadat who was assassinated in 1981. He was succeeded by Hosni Mubarak, whose resignation was announced in Cairo on Friday night.

Mr Netanyahu has said there is a risk that Islamic fighters could use the instability in Egypt to take power.

In the military statement issued by Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces said Egypt would "remain committed to all its regional and international treaties".
