Fatal building collapse in Luxor

8:53 am on 13 February 2011

At least 13 people died and nearly two dozen were injured when a building collapsed on Saturday in the southern Egyptian tourist town of Luxor.

Officials say the toll could rise further as workers are still digging through the rubble of the six-storey building.

It appears to have collapsed as a result of construction work around the walls of the ground floor.

Such accidents are relatively frequent in Egypt, where construction guidelines are regularly flouted and extra floors are often added to buildings without planning permission.
