$US2.5 billion needed for vaccines for children

Save the Children says more than a million children could be saved if money is found for new vaccines for diarrhoea and pneumonia.

The two illnesses kill three times as many children aged under-five years across the world as malaria and AIDS put together.

Until now the vaccines have been paid for by a Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations or GAVI.

But the BBC reports that $US2.5 billion is needed by GAVI over the next five years to keep the vaccines going.
