7:04 pm on 13 February 2011

Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has ordered an investigation into a stampede at an election rally in which 11 people died.

The rally in the southern city of Port Harcourt was part of Mr Jonathan's campaign for re-election in April.

Witnesses say a policeman fired into the air to disperse supporters and then panic ensued.

The BBC reports that President Jonathan, whose People's Democratic Party has won every presidential vote since the return to civilian rule in 1999, is favoured to win April's election.
