Four Americans who were on a yacht hijacked by Somali pirates have been killed, the United States military says.

The US military said its forces trailing the vessel had responded to gunfire heard aboard but found the two men and two women had been shot by their captors, the BBC reports.

The yacht S/V Quest was hijacked on Friday. It was owned and sailed by retired couple Scott and Jean Adam of California. Also killed were two US passengers, Phyllis Mackay and Bob Riggle.

Jean and Scott Adam had been sailing around the world for more than seven years.
