Premiers against parallel book imports

State and territorial governments in Australia are against parallel imports of books.

Premiers and chief ministers in Brisbane on Friday expressed support for authors who oppose changes to the federal copyright laws.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said they do not support any significant changes that would threaten the Australian publishing industry.

She said protecting Australia's culture and creativity and creative industries is important.

Big retailers say opening the market wider to imported books would lower prices for books. They also say more people are already buying cheap books online from overseas dealers.

But authors say there is no guarantee book prices will fall under a freer import regime.
