8:49 pm on 4 March 2011

The High Court in Fiji has given a life sentence Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, found guilty this week of inciting mutiny in 2000.

The rebellion was aimed at assassinating military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

According to the Fijivillage website, Justice Gounder stressed that Ratu Inoke is not eligible for parole for a period of eight years.

It came at the end of the Naitasiri high chief's second trial for the mutiny.

An earlier conviction and life sentence was overturned on appeal.

Last year, Ratu Inoke was given a seven-year prison sentence for plotting to kill Commodore Bainimarama in 2007.
