NASA satellite launch fails

An attempt by United States space agency NASA to launch its latest Earth observation mission has ended in failure.

NASA's Glory satellite lifted off from California on Friday on a quest to gather data about factors that influence the climate.

Five minutes into the flight, part of the launch rocket failed to separate properly, the BBC reports.

The rocket is thought to have fallen into the ocean, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Glory had been carrying instruments that would have measured the total energy coming from the Sun and looked at particles in the atmosphere that can trap that energy or scatter it back out into space.
