State television in Saudi Arabia says the government has banned all protests and marches.

Quoting the country's Interior Ministry, it says the security forces will use all measures to prevent any attempt to disrupt public order.

Minority Shi'ites in Saudi Arabia have staged small protests in the east of the country, in an area close to Bahrain.

The statement from the Interior Ministry says regulations "forbid categorically all sorts of demonstrations, marches and sit-ins, as they contradict Islamic Sharia law and the value and traditions of Saudi society.
