The United States has told its allies in Asia that more help is needed in Afghanistan.

Addressing a defence meeting in Singapore, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates thanked New Zealand for continuing to help man Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan.

But he said the region needs more resources, including aid and expertise, to help build infrastructure and to expand and maintain the Afghan National Army.

New Zealand Defence Minister Wayne Mapp was also at the meeting.

He says the United States is interested in the review the Government is undertaking of this country's contribution to Afghanistan.
