Fire sweeps through Mumbai shanty town

12:47 pm on 6 March 2011

About 2000 people in Mumbai have been made homeless by a fire that swept through one of the city's sprawling slums.

The blaze late on Friday injured 21 people and ravaged scores of homes in the Garib Nagar slum, near Mumbai's Bandra Railway Station, though no-one was killed.

The home of one of the leading child stars in the film Slumdog Millionaire - which highlighted the plight of India's poor - was gutted.

Rubina Ali says she has lost precious souvenirs of the 2008 Oscar-winning film, the BBC reports.

Thanks to her role in the film, at eight years old, she and her family will be rehoused.
