Sri Lankan journalist beaten

2:22 pm on 2 June 2009

Police in Sri Lanka say unknown attackers have abducted and beaten a Sri Lankan journalist and media rights activist.

Poddala Jayantha is the latest journalist to face violence in a nation with a long history of abuse and killings of media workers.

He was left lying bloodied in a marshy area in Colombo.

Colombo National Hospital says Mr Jayantha is conscious and receiving treatment.

The Government says nine journalists have been killed in Sri Lanka since 2006.
