Fighting in central Somalia between pro-government militia and Islamists has left at least 64 people dead.

Tribal edlers say the fighting broke out on Friday in a village near the Ethiopian border, when the fighters from the Hezb al-Islamiya group tried to recapture the area from a pro-government group.

Thirty six bodies were found afterwards in the battle zone. Twenty eight more were found on Saturday.

There are reports that more than 60 wounded have been taken to the closest hospital, 70km from the fighting.

The area is about 400km north of the capital Mogadishu.
