Sea The Stars wins Epsom Derby

Sea The Stars won the Epsom Derby on Saturday.

The Irish-trained colt won the 2,000 Guineas earlier in the season and is the first horse to complete the Guineas-Derby double since 1989.

It was the third win in the classic for jockey Mick Kinane, 49.

Fame and Glory, the favourite finished second in the 12 furlong (2.4km) event. Masterofthehorse was third.

Irish entries accounted for eight of the field in the 230th running of the Epsom classic.

Jockeys wore black armbands in memory of Irish trainer Vincent O'Brien who died this week at the age of 92.

He trained six Epsom Derby winners, including Sir Ivor and Nijinsky.

Summer Bird wins Belmont Stakes

In the United States, Summer Bird won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

Second place went to Dunkirk. Mine That Bird was third.

It was the 141st running of the 1.5 mile event.

Mine That Bird won the Kentucky Derby as a 50/1 outsider and finished second by one length in the Preakness.
