Gun battle in Acapulco

7:46 am on 8 June 2009

At least 15 gunmen thought to be linked to drug cartels and two soldiers have been killed in clashes in the Mexican resort of Acapulco.

Grenades were thrown at the troops from a house that had been surrounded by soldiers.

Army officials say several soldiers and bystanders were wounded in the two-hour battle, in an old area of the city late on Saturday night.

Tourists were evacuated from several hotels in the neighbourhood.

President Felipe Calderon launched a military campaign against drug cartels in 2006.

Thousands of troops have since been deployed throughout the country against drug gangs. Nearly 9000 people have been killed in the last two years.
