The Japanese news agency Kyodo News has withdrawn a story about a young man pulled alive from the rubble eight days after the country's massive earthquake and tsunami.
Doubts have been raised about the story, which has been broadcast widely by Japanese and international media.
Kyodo says the man had in fact been to an evacuation centre already and had returned to his ruined home when he was discovered by rescue workers.
The 9.0 quake and the tsunami it triggered have killed at least 7200 people. About 11,000 more remain missing.
Many survivors have been left without water, electricity, fuel or enough food; hundreds of thousands are homeless.
