US Supreme Court nominee breaks her ankle

3:54 pm on 9 June 2009

Sonia Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's nominee for the United States Supreme Court, has fractured her ankle.

Judge Sotomayor tripped while on her way to Washington for a series of meetings with senators.

The White House said she will still be able to attend the meetings.

Judge Sotomayor's nomination needs to be approved by a majority in the Senate before she can take up her seat on the court.

She is holding meetings with key senators before the vote to discuss her judicial philosophy and persuade them to back her nomination.

If approved, she would become the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court.
