The Save the Children charity expects 100,000 children in Japan could be displaced as a result of the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami on 11 March.

It says about 500,000 people are living in makeshift evacuation centres such as schools and hospitals, and are not expected to return home for months.

Save the Children International has been visiting centres north of Sendai where the tsunami hit.

It says fear and anxiety over nuclear radiation and giant waves are gripping some children.

The number of people confirmed dead or listed as missing from the disaster is at least 26,000.
