7:41 pm on 25 March 2011

At least 50 people have been killed and dozens of buildings destroyed by a strong earthquake in Myanmar near the Thai border.

Forty people have also been injured in the shallow quake on Thursday at 8.25pm local time and officials expect the death toll to rise.

Tremors were felt as far away as Bangkok, almost 800km from the epicentre, Hanoi and parts of China, Reuters reports.

The deaths are in the town of Tarlay, close to the epicentre. An official says five monasteries and 35 buildings collapsed in the town.

One person has been confirmed dead over the border in Thailand.
